Notes & Methodology
.Data sources. Fees and features verified against each platform's official fee schedule and help documentation as of June 2026, cross-checked against independent Canadian reviews. Spreads, promos, and APYs change frequently, confirm current terms directly with each platform before signing up.
.Crypto is not CDIC- or CIPF-protected. Unlike cash or securities, cryptocurrency held on any platform is not covered by CDIC (deposit) or CIPF (investor) insurance. "Insurance" here refers to private custodial coverage against theft/hacking only, it does not protect against market losses or platform insolvency. For long-term holdings, self-custody in a hardware wallet remains the lowest-risk option.
.You cannot hold direct crypto in a TFSA or RRSP. The CRA does not treat cryptocurrencies as qualified investments, so none of these platforms can hold coins in a registered account. To get crypto exposure inside a TFSA/RRSP, Canadians use crypto ETFs (e.g. BTCC) through a regular brokerage instead.
.The $30,000 altcoin limit. Under CSA rules, retail investors in most provinces face an annual net-buy limit of CAD $30,000 on crypto assets other than Bitcoin, Ether, Litecoin and Bitcoin Cash. This applies broadly across these platforms (including CIRO members) and does not apply to residents of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Quebec, or to verified Eligible ($100K) / Accredited (no limit) investors.
.Regulatory tier. "CIRO Member" means the platform is a registered investment dealer and member of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization, the highest tier of Canadian oversight. "Restricted Dealer" platforms are CSA-registered and legally operating while completing their CIRO membership applications. Both are legitimately registered; restricted-dealer status is not a red flag, which is why no "loser" is marked on that row.
."Simple" vs "Pro" pricing. Most platforms charge a high spread on their easy buy/sell screen and a much lower maker/taker fee on a separate "Pro" or "Advanced" interface within the same account. The single biggest cost mistake Canadians make is buying on the simple screen. NDAX is the exception, one flat 0.20% regardless of interface.
.Ownership note. Bitbuy (and sister platform Coinsquare) operate under WonderFi Technologies, whose acquisition by Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ: HOOD) received final CIRO approval and is expected to close on or about June 1, 2026.
